Consider the lilies of the field . . .
One day as I walked across the yard of my county home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia my attention was drawn to a patch of tiny, bright-blue flowers in my neglected lawn.
Bending down for a closer look, I realized that these little wildflowers—called Speedwell, I learned—standing only a quarter-inch above my lawn, were incredibly beautiful. I decided then and there that I wanted to find (consider) other lilies of the field, as Jesus said in Matthew 628, and share their beauty with others, as well as learn more about them.
This guide brings together the results of that resolution gorgeous images of hundreds of these little jewels of God's handiwork discovered while we enjoyed some twelve years of happy hours rambling across this beautiful countryside. To assist you in locating these wildflowers this book is divided into chapters describing the terrain, ecology, and season in which each of these lilies may be found.

In addition, you will find detailed Indexes that will help you identify a lily that is new to you. If you don't recognize a lily, look up the color of its blossom, or if you recognize it then go to the index of common names, or, if you know a lily by its botanical name you can check the scientific name index.

Finally, in all of this, my wife and I give God the glory for the years we were enabled to get out to enjoy the beauty of His creation “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." (Revelation 411)

Best wishes for happy hiking from two octogenarians who still love to ramble Enjoy!

"Considering the Lilies" is a book with Interactive links allowing easy access to interrelated areas throughout. The Contents and Flower Index areas are completely interactive.

While "Considering the Lilies" is a book about wild flora and fauna nestled in the forests and valleys of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, it's about so much more.

Join Harold Hanson in his well-written, photo-illustrated wildflower book as he shares a depth of information and understanding he has gleaned from a world hidden in plain sight. This world is in Shenandoah Valley's ever-changing meadows, woodlands and hills near his home west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Treat yourself to an introduction into this natural world, as described in Harold Hanson's inimitable fashion - natures' rhythms come alive as presented through his skillful photography and descriptive words and phrases. Harold Hanson opens the door to this living, breathing world of creation.

Walk with Harold through the changeable spring season, crossing meadows and wooded areas in search of unpredictable early blooming wildflowers. Read his enjoyable tales about various "lilies", a general term Harold uses in this book for all wildflowers. Some of these flowers are as odd, or more so, than any other species; their oddities having given them strange, unforgettable common wildflower names! In addition to the photos and general information, Harold includes the Latin and Family names of wildflowers and plants in this book.

As Harold and his wife Becky retired to their home in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, he began taking pictures of Earth's wild bounties nearby and in the surrounding areas. He has avidly pursued native and non-native wildflowers, and the grasses thriving at their very feet and those further afield in the woods marshes and valleys.

In Harold's search for the more elusive wildflowers, he has also discovered some rather unusual wildlife, the fauna, or, "the legged lilies", as he refers to them. It was difficult to pick my favorite "legged lily", so I'll just go with the most unusual name - the Assassin bug!

As you walk with Harold through this beautiful, informational book, his easy-going conversational style keeps you at his side throughout. You'll find yourself matching him stride-for-stride, until you're lost in his photos and descriptions. This is one of the most enjoyable nature books existing in the market today!

Any nature lover will find this book a refreshing, "have-to" purchase!

Still Considering the Lilies eBook Harold Hanson Rebecca Hanson Reviews

While reading CONSIDERING THE LILIES, I enjoyed the biblical stories and talk of the good old days that the author has throughout the book along with the beautiful photos. I was surprised to hear that the dandelion was in the lily family, but as every mother knows the flower was a thoughtful & beautiful gift from a child. The author tells about many flowers including wood sorrel, after all this time I had no idea what the weed in my lawn was called, but as the author pointed out their was beauty in every flower and weed alike. In this book we are told where flowers get their names, medicinal qualities of plants, stories from the author, and we learn about the "bugs" that also enjoy the beautiful flowers. This book is great for all ages and I would definitely share it with children. I hope the author brings his camera along for many more walks. I would love to hear about more plants and animals. A great read!

This book is simply amazing. If high quality close up pictures of nature is your thing, you'll love this book. The author has spent years compiling the photos he took in the micro world of his lawn, then the surrounding field where he lives, coupled with great information about the plants and insects that live there. His close ups will amaze you!!
